GETTING REGULATORY RELIEF DURING A NATIONWIDE PANDEMIC

Many of our site RSOs are concerned about remaining in compliance while managing this pandemic in their corporations. Vendors are unable come on site to do specific timely tasks or the vendor is unable to perform travel due to a federal or state request to “stay indoors”. So, how do we remain in compliance? Attached is a policy statement for the Director of the State of Florida (which I’ve noticed is the policy of some other Agreement States and the USNRC). In the event you feel the need to request a variance, please let us know and we’ll assist you.

“Thank you Ben for reaching out to our bureau regarding potential COVID19 issues impacting licensee requirements. I applaud your commitment to radiation safety and the concerns you addressed. To address these concerns, if the licensee has identified a temporary need to change processes to protect staff or patients during this crisis, which may be in conflict with the regulations or their license commitments, the bureau will consider those needs on a case-by-case basis. They should feel free to submit those requests in writing for consideration to:

Bureau of Radiation Control
Radioactive Material Section

Tallahassee, FL 32399

Despite the circumstances, licensees are expected to continue to use radioactive materials in a safe manner and secure them appropriately when not in use.
