We have already learned about the pocket ion chamber.  This is a great Active monitors used for reading doses in real time

The direct-reading pocket ion chamber has several advantages:

1. it is a simple device
2. it can be directly read by anyone at any time
3. it can be re-set with a charger and used repeatedly

These devices are still in use today for certain applications.

However, there are some significant disadvantages:

1. once the information is read, it is lost
2. accidental discharge of the device could occur
3. it is only useful for photon radiation
4. there is no information about photon energies

People working with mixed types and energies need a different type of personal dosimeter, and better methods of documenting doses were becoming more important with regulatory and legal changes.
